Today’s Animal Spirit Guides…The Gorilla!

Today’s Animal Spirit Guide is Gorilla!

I’ve talked about Gorilla previously in a personal entry when this was my guide for the day a while back. Here is the message of Gorilla:

“Take the time to listen compassionately to those you love, especially your family members.”

Gorilla’s are amazing animals. They are huge and powerful and quite impressive if you’ve ever had the chance to see on up close, but even with all their power they are quite gentle and, as a species, are quite family oriented. As male gorillas mature they are somewhat pushed out of the family unit with the intention of them finding a female to mate with and create their own family unit, however it’s been know that “bachelor groups” have been created in the while when males either don’t find females or when they are not ready to on some level and instead they find comfort in each other. These groups can last from a few months to a few years or longer. Newborns actually cling to their mothers hair immediately and the mother will continue to hold her baby for the first 4 months of it’s life, almost never letting go of it. Family and that family connection are very important for the gorilla.

So with this we receive the message of Gorilla. Family is important and they need to know you love them and are there for them since, while we seem to always expect them to be there, part of us knows that eventually they leave the nest, one way or another. Sometimes one of the best ways to let them know you love them is to be open within the lines of communication. By listening to those we love and care about rather than always trying to take center stage we are able to show another level of love and compassion. With Gorilla today use this as a message to either spend time talking to and sharing with a loved one or reconnecting with someone that you haven’t had open communication with for a while. Don’t just say “I love you” out of habit, do something to show it on a deeper level.

Other keywords for Gorilla include:
Intelligence, peacefulness, family, strength, nobility, generosity, gentleness, calmness, vegetarianism, loyalty, patience, dexterity, steadiness, scrutiny, conservation

      Hi Andrew,

That is an interesting vision for sure! First let’s look at the power animal aspects of each of these two and then we’ll look more deeply at each and see what they have to offer. I definitely get the impression from your description right off that we’re talking about a transition of power. Tigers are much more active where gorillas are more passive but both are animals of power and loyalty.

In the realm of power animals, Tiger is seen as a hunter and a solitary. Tiger moves things out of the way to make room to really be in the present, living in the moment. Tiger is seen as a power animal for achieving success through obstacles.

Gorilla is seen as a power animal that helps bring us to our full potential. Gorilla carries the power of problem solving, taking the lead and using courage to not only accept and work with our potential but also to achieve our goals.

Tigers are animals that can be in a pack together or they can go on their own. They are often on their own when they hunt and when they are looking for something that they desire. Gorillas are very family oriented animals. There may be a leader, one who makes the decisions and directs the group, but they are rarely on their own. There is usually another part of the family close by. While the tiger is an animal of clearing the room to hunt for what you desire the gorilla is about sharing those things; both animals ultimately have an aspect of achievement and success. The gorilla enjoys his success peacefully and surrounded by those he loves while tiger might just revel in the moment of realizing that he has achieved his goal with little sharing or caring for anyone else around him.

With the vision showing a transition from tiger to gorilla it might be that you’re being called to share in your successes with others. You may also be called to be more involved with family (whether your actual family or friends as a “family of choice”), going from solitary leader to group/family leader. Many aspects of these animals are similar but it’s how they ultimately live in their communities that can set them part. I would think that a message from this for you is one of being more involved, sharing and helping others more, and letting others be part of your joys and successes in life.

The fact that you yourself are male doesn't necessarily have to mean that messages will be delivered to you by a male figure in a vision. We all have male and female energies within us, our anima and animus. The female energies are more nurturing and emotional where our male side is more proactive and protective. Having a message like this which deals with an emotional shift delivered by a female would actually make sense if that's how you wanted to rationalize it. It also could be that this female figure is a guide of sorts for you and this could just be the first of possibly many other encounters for you with that spirit. I believe that the function of the female figure in your vision was simply to be the messenger and nothing more, but truly that's up to you to have to decide on.

hi i've been researching on the subject of spirit/totem/power animals for the past couple of days and i've found myself to be very much linked to the gorilla, this was most notable upon my reflection of watching the beast machines series and my personality connection with that of optimus primal, as he had been a thorough believer in free will, compassion, balance and the like. anyway, onto my question, if i am basing this on estimates, how can i be sure? i meditated on it yesterday and saw a jungle with an ape and a rat running alongside one another within a lush jungle, followed by visions of a cheetah, a snake and a flash of an otter (though this may have been a memory of a quiz i had done) If my power animal is a gorilla, how can i build up my friendship with it and how can i repay the gorilla for any information given? thanks in advance, friend 🙂

      Hi Christopher,

My first recommendation would be to do a journey specifically to connect with your power animal. Here is the meditation process that I would recommend for that.

Get yourself in a meditative state (relax, breathe deeply, etc). Visualize yourself standing in front of a giant tree with deep, deep roots and branches that reach so far up into the sky and clouds that you can't see where they end. This is the World Tree. Traveling through the World Tree will bring you to either the Upper, Middle, or Lower world. Walk around the tree, smell the earth and the leaves around you, reach your hand out and feel the bark of the tree. As you do this place the intention into the tree that you want to meet with your power animal.

Find a place in the roots that open up and create a passage way or tunnel. Go into the tunnel and follow where it leads. Do this while still holding the intention that you are going to meet your power animal. When you come to the end of the tunnel it may either open up into a space like a forest or other surroundings or you may come to a door. Open the door or step into the space and ask that your power animal that is most right and correct for you right now to come to you.

At this point the journey is all yours. You'll want to look around, take note of your surroundings, observe any sounds, smells, etc. Your power animal might come right away or it might take a little while. It's also possible that your power animal may not every show up; it's possible that they may be in the background or hiding so that they can observe you. If you wait and feel like they aren't going to show up you can always just let them know that you would like to connect on your next visit and then try this journey again in a few days.

If your power animal does arrive you can ask it questions and communicate but they may or may not communicate back right away. Sometimes they may want to build up a trust or relationship first. Give it time and make these journeys regularly. Your gratitude is often all the repayment a power animal requires but you can always ask if there is something in the way of an offering that they would like in exchange.

Also, it's important to remember that you power animals can change over time and sometimes and animal that we feel connected to may not actually be our power animal. Often our power animals have lessons to teach us or things to help us get through. Because of that an animal that has connections to things we are already solid or set in within our lives and paths wouldn't have much to offer us. So it's possible that you may do a journey to meet your power animal and you may find that a completely different and somewhat unexpected animal may appear. Don't ignore it or discount it. Whoever arrives is there for a reason and has something to teach you.
