One of the girls that lives in my apartment building put out a hummingbird feeder a month or so ago for a bird that we have that comes along into our little courtyard-like area. She hung the feeder from the inside of the large umbrella over a table outside. This table is across from my living room window and I often see the bird come through and stop at the feeder in the mornings. Then this Monday morning, as I was sitting on the couch having breakfast I was looking out and saw the little hummingbird just kind of hanging out among a string of outdoor lights that are also under the umbrella. The bird was hanging out, sitting on something and stayed put for quite a while. I thought this was a little odd for a hummingbird out in the open, more or less, and I thought to myself “I bet that hummingbird is laying eggs.” From the angle of where I wasn’t I couldn’t really see what was going on under there so the next morning I went out and took a peek and this is what I found.
I nice, itty bitty hummingbird nest. You can get an idea of how small it is based on the things around it. Now, I can’t see inside of it because it’s high up and I don’t want to get too close so I took the pictures from a distance with a zoom…and I’m now on constant cat watch when I’m around the window because the same neighbor that put out the feeder, which the nest is right across from, also has two cats and her and her roommate let them outside and we’ve already caught one of them up on the table trying to see what’s happening up there. I worry that the cats hanging out around the table will scare the bird from coming back to the nest so I’m keeping an eye out and next time of see one of the neighbors with the cats I’m going to point out the nest to them and ask them to keep an eye on their cats.
But I would say that’s a pretty neat little sign of spring this week!
