Last week when the Full Pink Moon came around I shared my process for making gemstone elixirs. If you like working with crystals you gotta try using elixirs because they are freakin’ fantastic and so useful! One of the steps to making elixirs is a step that should be part of anything that you do with crystals – cleansing, or more to the point, retuning. Whenever I bring up the topic of crystals and retuning rather than “cleansing” there are always questions. So here’s my rundown on crystal retuning vs. “traditional” cleansing, why it works, and how to do it. Seriously, 60 seconds or less and you have crystals all set and ready to go!
Crystals, Vibration and You!
The first thing that we have to talk about is the Law of Vibration. This is the scientific principle that tells us that everything is made of energy and everything vibrates and nothing is ever at a state of rest. Actually, everything is in a constant state of vibration, and the only diference between something that is solid and something that isn’t is the rate of vibration. Lower vibrations mean slower movement {hence it appears solid}, higher vibrations mean faster movement.
When two vibrations come in contact with one another the lower vibration will rise up, synch up, or entrain to the higher vibration. This is how crystal healing works at its core; when we are not feeling well physically or emotionally our personal vibrations and energy field are low. By using perfectly tuned crystals that are vibrating at higher levels help to raise our vibration, helping to make us feel better. We pick crystals that have a vibration that resonates with an intention that we wish to resonate with and by using those stones our energy entrains to energy of the stone.
We ideally want our crystals to be at their most perfect, stable vibration before we use them for healing or anything else. The vibration of a stone will slow a bit as it’s being used and by using sound vibration we can basically shock the vibration of the stone so that it goes back to its dominant oscillary rate {DOR}. Crystals, because of their perfect crystalline structure, have set DORs where as ours will change since it isn’t as stable. Eventually the stone will go back to it’s natural DOR on it’s own but this is a way to speed this process up and in 60 seconds or less have perfectly vibrating stones ready to use!
Hold up a sec…
Before we go any further I want to clarify that when I use the terms “crystals”, “stones” or “gemstones” I tend to use the terms interchangeably though stones and crystals are truly two different things. Both are minerals however a crystal has a repeating geometric pattern of crystalline molecules which makes them look like crystals {like quartz points, for example}. Stones are usually flat or round with not geometric points or angles and are a combination of different minerals {obsidian and lapis lazuli are examples of this}. There are also stones known as cryptocrystalline stones which look like stones but are the exception to this crystal/stone rule because they actually have a crystalline structure, it’s just microscopic and can’t be seen with the naked eye {onyx, chalcedony, aventurine, jade, shiva lingham are examples of this}.
Either way, because everything vibrates vibrational tuning works with crystals and stones.
Vibrational Tuning vs. Other Cleansing Methods
One really important thing that I want to get across here is that the vibrational tuning method is just one way to prepare crystals for use, but it’s my preferred method out of all the ones I’ve tired. The only other one that I feel really works well is burying them in the ground for a period of time. My thought is that since the vibrational entrainment is what really makes the crystals do their thing, then that’s what we should focus on resetting.
I guess I should also just say that I don’t see crystals as needing to be “cleansed”. To me that implies that there is something wrong with them, that they’re “dirty”. Crystals don’t absorb energy, their vibrations change, hence retuning rather than cleansing. I do think it stands to reason that occasionally cleansing a stone because of environmental energies and the collection of positive ions makes sense, but truly I’ve found that tuning is more necessary than cleansing.
If you use water to cleanse your stones you need to make sure they have a Mohs Hardness of 5 or greater to prevent them from getting ruined. Smudging helps to remove the positive ions that have collected around a stone but it doesn’t affect the vibration of the stone itself. Then there’s sunlight and moonlight. I feel that these are nice added energies for your stones but as part of a layered approach. You also need to be careful with sunlight because exposure over time can fade the pigment in lighter colored silicates. {I have a piece of amethyst that sat in a window for a while that went from a deep plum color to pale lavender because of the sun.}
Experiment and find the method that works best for you. I love talking about the retuning method because most people don’t know about and it really, truly works! And it’s fast where some of these other methods can take days or weeks.
How To Do It
All you need are your stones that you want to retune {you can use as many as you’d like at one time and you can use different stones together} and something that will emit a sound vibration like a bell, singing bowl, tingshas, or a tuning fork {there are actually crystal tuning forks}.
Here I am getting ready to retune stones for a crystal grid!
Ring the bell or bowl next to or over the stones once, meaning strike your bell just once or ring your bowl until the vibration reaches it’s peek. You want to make sure that your stones are in the direct path of the sound vibration, which is why I sound my singing bowl right above the stones. Let the sound naturally die down, letting the vibration stretch out and resonate. And that’s it!
That’s right…THAT’S IT!
The vibrations and the crystal itself does the rest. The sound from the bell sends out a strong vibration that jolts the energy field of the stones and this has their energy rise up and then back down to their DOR quickly. So within 60 seconds you have stones ready to rock! {Pun intended…hehe}
How do you know it worked? You just do because it just does. I know, a really non-descript sort of answer, but it’s true. The energy work within the stones is something that we can usually feel. You can take the stones and hold them and tune into them before doing the retuning and see how different they feel.

Thanks so much for sharing. I was just wondering how to retune / program a set of chakra stones I got.
I understand how re-tuning works, how do we program the stones / crystals to help with any intention??

Actually, programming a crystal is a whole other issue and is another thing largely misunderstood. Most crystals will not hold energy that you try to put into them, because again they don’t absorbe energy and their DOR is far stronger than our energy directed into them. The only stones that have a potential for being programed are quartz and they don’t hold a program for any real length of time.
You bring up a good question though, so hey…another blog post tomorrow on crystals, this time on programming! 😀

Hi Jess, I don't have a singing bowl but I heard clips on Youtube of singing bowls. Would playing a clip of a video have the same effect?
Thank you!
