Sometimes we forget that our hands are magick. We forget that our index finger is our natural wand and that we have energy centers in all our fingers and in our palms. When we work magick or even when we’re doing seemingly mundane things there is energy in our hands that goes into all we do. Harnessing that energy and literally putting our magick in our hands can make a difference on how things flow to us.
Before we get into the “how” of this let’s look at a super quick rundown of what the fingers mean. This is going to be really abridged. Even though you may not be doing palm reading, this is the art of working with the hands and you’ll find lots of information in palmistry that can help you with magick.
Left or Right?
Your two hands aren’t identical, not in appearance or in energy. It’s kind of like your eyebrows, they’re sisters, not twins. Similar but different. They may have similar general shapes but the lines in your hands won’t be identical and even the size of your fingers can be a little different on one hand than the other.
I have that problem, but more with the thickness than the length of my fingers. The fingers on my right hand are a little thicker than my left. Rings I wear on my right hand I can’t wear on my left, or at least not on the same fingers.
When it comes to the energy of your hands they are each unique.
Your right hand is associated with masculine energy and the vibes of assertiveness, power, activity and action, construction and deconstruction, and giving.
Your left hand is associated with feminine energy including the powers of intuition, caring and nurturing, patience and gentleness, and receiving.
Some people say that if you’re right-handed you’re more attuned to your masculine side and if you’re left-handed you have more connection to your feminine side. But there’s a big problem with that. For many, many years if children were naturally left-handed when they started to learn to write they would be trained to be right-handed.
You may (or may not) know that there is a stigma against left-handed people. Some of this shows up in different cultural myths but the big ones are Christian and Catholic. This comes from stories about the right hand of God being seen as the more favorable and blessed hand/side. On God’s left side sit the angels associated with death and where the souls of the fallen will reside.
Because of this, there was an inherent idea the right is “good” and left is “bad”…or right is “life” and left is “death” which implies this weird good/evil energy. Over time the Catholic Church started to see left-handed people being somehow connected to Satan or forces of darkness. That idea remained for many generations so when someone noticed their child naturally favored their left hand they would quickly be trained to be right-handed before that whole left-hand thing took root.
It’s fucking weird, yes, but it is what it is. If you’re left-handed and you were allowed to stay left handed congrats! My husband is left handed and I’m right-handed. And he is definitely the woman in this marriage…lol.
OK, so now, your fingers!
Fingers and the Planets
Each of your fingers is associated with a planet. These in my research over the years are pretty universal with the exception of one finger; your thumb.
Some people see the Thumb as being connected to no planet at all. Some see the Thumb as being connected to both Mars and Venus because the base of the thumb is actually in-between the mounds of Mars and Venus on your palm. And then there are some who associate the Thumb with Mars.
I personally see the Thumb as associated with Mars and Venus. Mars is associated with war and Venus with love. And we know that war and love, sex and violence, love and hate are always tied. You may have heard that the saying “rule of thumb” comes from an English law in the 18th century that said a husband could legally beat his wife with a stick as long as it wasn’t wider than the width of this thumb.
Yeah, that’s not actually true.
There is no law that was ever passed that allowed this and there was only ever one English judge who publicly supported spousal abuse and he was quickly talked out of that position when he was publicly chastised for his beliefs. The actual origin of the phrase isn’t known but the most logical answer is that it referenced a “handy” measuring rule in early carpentry.
Since the associations of the Thumb can vary, I invite you to see what you think fits you. You may even want to examine the angle of your thumb. Does it seem like it leans more to the left or the right? If it leans more left it could be more connected to Mars for you (since it would be projecting from the right which is the side where the Mars point is). If it leans right then it would be more connected to the Venus since the mound of Venus is on the left of your palm. If your thumb seems to be pretty centered then it may have equal influence from both planets.
Here is a rough association of the other fingers, the planets, and their energy:
Index – Jupiter – gaining favor, opportunity, money, recognition, influence
Middle – Saturn – success, focus, truth, a reward from hard work, intellect
Ring – Sun – ambition, power, fortune, commitments, heart space
Little – Mercury – new ideas, communication, memory, dreams, gratitude
Put These Together
When you’re using the tips below for activating magick in your hands, consider which hand’s energy you may want to connect with in association with a certain finger.
Here’s a quick idea of a few things:
? Want to attract friends in powerful places? Work with your right ring finger.
? Want to receive more creative inspiration? Work with your left little finger.
? Want to find more opportunities for healthy living? Work with your left right finger.
? Want to have a sudden financial windfall? Work with your left middle finger.
And now on with our tips!
Here are five things that you can do working with your hands as well as working with specific fingers. A few of these can be specific to your fingers and other are for your hands as a whole.
Mindfully Pick Nail Polish Colors
Paint your nails, either all of them or the nail of a specific finger, to protect a certain energy when using your hands. If you want to get real fancy you can also add a little nail art that is connected to your intentions. Don’t be afraid to only paint one finger or to paint all your nails a certain color that hits the general intention or energy you’re after but paint one nail different because it is extra potent for your intention. And naturally, make sure that special nail is associated with the best hand and finger for the job.
Oil Your Fingers
Before you are going to sit down to type an email or work on a writing project dress your fingers with an oil, concentrating on the tips that hit the keys. You can use essential oils or a magickal condition oil that has an energy you want to project in your writing. You can do the same thing when you’re going to write with a pen as well, but since we spend more time writing on a computer or device these days, keep your oils handy at your computer.
Make Magickal On-The-Go Hand Wash or Lotion
Use magickal oils or magickal bath salt blends mixed in with some water in a little spray bottle that you can take with you when you head out of the house. Spray down your hands and rub them together to generate some energy before you are going to be using your hands for something. Maybe a protection spray before making a long drive or a spray made with Steady Work oil or bath salts before going to a job interview. You can do the same thing with unscented hand lotion using oils. Add a little of a specific oil to some plain lotion and rub it into your hands before you’re heading off to do something.
Wearing Rings on the Correct Finger
Be mindful of the rings you’re wearing and what hand and finger they are on. Are you possibly wearing something that could be actually blocking something from you or are you wearing something that is working in your favor. This is something you really want to be aware of when you’re actually doing spells or ritual magick. I was once in a coven that required we take off all our rings before going into ritual space for this very reason.
As an example, I wear a gold pentacle ring on my right ring finger. This activates power and protection, strong magickal action, actively working on magickal commitments, and overall connecting to the power of my magick in an active way.
If I wore this ring on my right left finger this would apply more to inner work and being more receptive when it comes to my magick and would have my focus more on intuitive and psychic magick and ambitions.
Point and Gesture Like You Mean It
Remember what I said about your index finger? This is your natural wand. But you can use your other fingers too. Think about all the different hand gestures you already know and likely do. From pointing at someone to giving them the middle finger, we’re doing that stuff with intention and you know you’re projecting energy when you do it. You can feel it! Just remember the last time you flipped someone off in a real moment of emotion and how it felt as that energy flowed through you and out of your hand (especially if it was someone you don’t know and it was out of real anger). Consider working with mudras!
If you’re Italian and had an Italian grandma or great grandma like I did you probably know the “le corna” or the “sign of the horns” as a gesture of warding off evil and invoking protection. Others actually use it for the reverse and use it as a way to curse someone. But it has another origin too, one that originates from the Greeks, where it is actually a sign that a man has been (or maybe someone wants him to be) betrayed by his wife, specifically by sleeping with someone else (the visual being that the fingers tucked into the hand represent someone basically grabbing him by the balls).
And of course, we see the horns in magick today in a few different ways. If the horns are made with the right hand with the thumb under the middle and ring fingers it involves and symbolizes the Horned God. If the horns are made with the left hand with the thumb over the middle and ring finger the gesture is used for cursing, but made on the right hand, again with the thumb under the fingers, it can be used for protection.
Yes, there is a LOT of power and magickal potential in your hands. Don’t let it go wasted or unnoticed.
