Doing a reading on New Year’s Day is something that a lot of spiritual practitioners and readers tend to do. It’s a way to set your markers for the year ahead…to set your intentions, goals, and plans. I tend to do one and I’ve always taught my tarot students to get into the habit of doing readings at big times of change and transition in their lives, and this is one that is always a turning point for us. A new year brings new change, so now is a time to do a reading!
If you have trouble reading for yourself let me share with you the one big secret that I tell all my students and that I have used for years. If you’re someone that feels you can’t be impartial with your own readings or you worry that you are going to read more into something than you should, this is what I recommend…
Do your reading with meanings from a book.
This is the only time you’ll ever hear me talk about using the meanings right from a book for a reading. I look at using the card meanings from a book in this situation almost like having an impartial interpreter/reader helping me out. I look up the meanings from a book of my choice {my preferred book is Power Tarot by Trish MacGregor and Phyllis Vega} and I don’t read into them. I use them just as they are I let those rest as the meanings for my readings. {This is also why I have started using the lenormand for my personal readings more than tarot because there is little to no room for intuitive interpretation with lenormand.}
I wanted to share a New Year Tarot Spread to help you get started with peering into 2013 so you can make the plans you need to kick some ass!
New Year Spread
Lay your cards out in the following pattern…3 cards in one row and 4 cards in a second row below.
Here are the card positions:
N = What I need to know about the coming year?
E = What will evolve in the new year?
W = What wild surprises are in store for the new year?
Y = Yikes! What can be improved upon for the new year?
E = What will the energy of the new year be like?
A = Apple – What will help make the new year healthy for me?
R = What will I reap this year?
While you can do this reading with a specific intention or idea in mind, I prefer to treat this like a “general” reading and let the card and the Universe just tell me what I need rather than focusing on something specific. All areas of your life are up for grabs with a reading like this.
