Have you ever found yourself wondering why it is that some people seem to always get guidance from the Divine or their guides but you seem to never get any sense that you’re being given messages? Do you just feel like you’re not being guided and you have no angels or guides watching over you?
Don’t worry, it’s not you and you’re not alone! The problem is how you see the signs. Most people expect that the signs from the Universe are always going to be big and huge and obvious when in fact they rarely are. Often the signs we’re meant to see are small ones. But we can also work with the Universe to make sure we get signs we’re going see and understand.
When you need guidance and you want to know if you’re on the right path getting a sign from the Universe is a great thing to have for reassurance. But what’s the use of a sign you don’t understand?! Did you know that you can actually create a mutually agreed upon sign? Well, you can!
What’s your question?
Make your question to the Universe clear and specific. “Will I get a job” is not real specific but “Will I get the job at the accounting firm I just applied for” is far more clear and specific. Be clear, be honey, be specific. Remember this is just between you and the Divine.
What is the sign you want to receive?
What sign would you like to see as the signal that gives you the positive “yes” answer to your question? It should be something that’s common enough that you’ll see it but not so common that you know you’re going to see it every day with ease. A bad sign is a dog but a better sign would be a specific type of dog, like a poodle.
Ask for your sign out loud.
I’m all about being vocal because our voice creates a vibration and that vibration ripples out through the energetic levels of the Universe. But whether you ask out loud, silently, or by writing it out in an angel letter or a journal, you have to formally ask. Your angels and guides are only going to send the sign if you ask them to do so. They have to respect your free will to receive or not receive help and guidance so be sure to ask your very specific question with your specific sign, formally.
Know your sign can come in any form.
So you’re sign is going to be a poodle. Don’t assume your poodle is going to be an actual poodle on a leash walking past you on the street. Your poodle could come in a dream, you might see a poodle on TV or you might overhear someone talking about a poodle. You might see a picture of a poodle in a magazine or you might read a story where someone has a poodle. If you encounter your sign in any form then that’s your sign!
Don’t negotiate your sign.
This is where we have to be honest with ourselves. If your sign is a poodle don’t start to play games with yourself because you’re not seeing your sign but you really want to. Don’t say “Well, I saw a small white dog that was really fluffy that could have been a poodle if someone shaved it right.” No. Your sign is a poodle and that’s it.
Another example is if you decide your sign is going to be a tiger but you see a lion, don’t assume that just because they’re both big cats that the lion counts. If your sign is a tiger then only a tiger is a positive “yes” sign from the Universe. Remember that we have a number of intuitive senses and our guides, angels and the Universe use them all to connect with us.
Set a timeframe.
You need to determine how long you’ll give the Universe to answer your question and give you your sign. If you don’t do this and leave things open ended you could wait forever and ever and eventually you’ll probably see your sign. Instead we want to set a specific timeframe. So you could say “If I’m going to get the account job I’ve applied for then I’ll see a poodle in the next 48 hours.” If you’re trying to decide if the right time is coming up to do something you might say “If I’m meant to take two weeks off from work to go on vacation in July, show me an orange tiger in the next 3 days.”
I wouldn’t suggested giving more than a week for something to show up. Really 3 days or 72 hours is best because, again, you don’t want to give this forever to come around. If the answer is yes the sign will come quickly.
No sign is still a sign!
You might be wondering “But what if I don’t see my sign in my timeframe?” Not seeing your sign is just as much an answer as actually seeing your sign. If you’ve asked for a sign to tell you that you’re going to get a job or you should do something, not seeing your sign in your timeframe means the answer is no.
When you’re asking for guidance it’s possible that the answer is not a positive one. Basically seeing your sign means “yes”, not seeing it means “no.” Not getting your sign is just another way of being guided to make a different decision or to take a different path which is going to lead you to something better. Don’t see it as a negative but another option.
Show gratitude.
Whether you get your sign or not, you have received the guidance you were after. Now its time to say thank you for the help of your guides and helpers. Remember that showing gratitude means you’ll more easily receive help in the future when you ask.
No go out there and ask for your signs!

Is asking the universe about someone specific and giving a time frame and ask to see their name a specific amount of times in that time frame the same? Or let’s say, “Will I marry within 5 years if today”, then give a time frame and ask to see the sign of wedding or someone discussing wedding (not marriage) wedding is the key…is that clear for the universe or no?
Jess Carlson says
No, it’s not really that clear because it’s a huge list of things to ask and it’s also something that could very easily change. Nothing is set in stone. Whether you’re talking to a card reader, a psychic, or even the Universe, the answers to questions like this can always change. There are probably many more small questions related to issues between today and the day you marry someone that would be more helpful. For instance, you might do this whole rigamarole of questions about this person and get positive answers, but then you break up in a month. Does that mean you wont get married in five years? Not necessarily…you could get back together…and you could break up 10 more times between now and five years down the road. But if you break up and you instantly have the reason “Well, I guess we’re never getting married and this is all over and those answers from the Universe were bullshit,” then you’re probably not going to marry this person because you’ve now changed your beliefs, thoughts, and focus.
Asking for signs from the Universe about things there aren’t likely to happen for months or years is pointless. Instead focus on more immediate issues and needs.
Latoya says
So how exactly should I ask for a sign? I currently have a small crush on someone and I ask if its returned and then i ask a time frame and to see his specific name a certain number of times. Is that good or is that too bland? Or if I will pass a test and on a specific day……Just wondering. I do ask about marriage but its not a specific person, just general.
Jess Carlson says
Don’t ask general questions, that’s a start. Like when you ask “Will I get married,” without any specifics attached because you’re not in a relationship and not on the path to marriage with someone, that’s a pretty 50/50 kind of answer. Chances are that yes, you’ll get married…someday…to someone…in the future. Or, no, maybe you wont. So that is part of why you’ll get mixed answers to some questions. Hypotheticals aren’t the kind of thing to ask about.
Now, about your crush…you could ask that question. But start with just one question. So if you want to know if he has an interest in you as well, determine your sign and determine a time frame to see that sign and then ask for your sign. So you might decide that you want to see his name five times over the next week as a sign of “yes.” You don’t need to set a sign for “no” because you’ll know the answer is “no” if you don’t get your full sign in the timeframe you set {seeing his name three times when you asked for five doesn’t count as a “maybe”}.
The only thing you need to pay attention to and be mindful of is that if you’re seeing the sign in a way that you see all the time, that kind of throws things off. Like, with seeing someone’s name…if you’re friends with them on social media you’re likely to see their name already. Seeing it five times on Facebook really doesn’t quite count. You want to ask for a sign that isn’t common, something that if you saw it it would really stand out and be a pretty obvious sign.
Latoya says
I truly am appreciative of this info. I sometimes ask about my crush and his name is common yet I have no one on a social network named thus person and I’ll ask for his specific name a certain amount of times and give a time frame. I usually see it in forms such as I’m watching a show and a gentleman is named my crush….or at work with patients, a patient is named my crush.
Sometimes I ask for a specific question and my sign be a lion….lol.
I get it, I must be specific.
Britany Phillips says
Thank you for your article. So you have any insight about seeing both signs you’ve asked for? For example, I asked a sign for yes and a sign for no. I received both of them.
Jess Carlson says
Seeing both signs can mean a few things. First, you might not be really clear in your question, or its possible that your question has sort of a “not sure” answer. Sometimes a definitive “yes” or “no” isn’t clear yet. But the big question is did you see them both at the same time? If you saw one and then later saw the other, the one that showed up first is your answer. If you need to, rephrase your question and ask again and see what comes up.
