It’s been a bit since we’ve had a deck review around here but I’m getting ready to dive into a few for you in the weeks ahead. There are some really awesome decks that have crossed my path in the last few months and I’m ready to share with you some new spirit toys for you to play with!
Today we’re going to take a look at The Color Mage Oracle by Bernard Charles, aka The Color Mage.
This is a self-published deck that comes with a deck of 70 cards and a short guidebook and is focused on color and color vibration. I’ve done a few color deck reviews {the last was The Chakra Oracle} and this one is much different from most of the ones you’ll find out there.
The big difference between The Color Mage Oracle and most other color themed decks is that there are no images on the cards, it’s just swatches of color. This is both what makes it awesome but also what might make it frustrating for some people. This deck is truly designed to work based on your intuitive relations to the colors which makes it a great tool for developing your intuition, especially your clairsentience. {OH, what, you’re not sure what that is? No prob! Come here, I’ve got you covered.}
The Cards
The backs of the cards are adorable with this honeycomb meets watercolor palette pattern. The cards shuffle well and aren’t too thick or too thin. I would suggest being a little gentle with them because after doing my usual bridge shuffling for a bit the cards were starting to bend easily.
The colors, of course, are beautiful and the matte gloss finish on the cards is sturdy. No need to worry about transfer, rubbing or chipping.
Along with the color swatch the cards have a name for the color and a few suggested key words. Unfortunately the font on the keywords is a little hard to read on some of the lighter colored cards, but for the most part it’s no biggie.
The Book
The book that comes with the deck is short and gives some general ideas about the vibes that a category of color carries. The book is sectioned off by color category: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Pink, Blue and Purple. Within each category are 10 cards in various hues and shades of that color. For instance in the Red family you’ll find Scarlet, Coral and Himalaya and in Purple there’s Wise Owl, Indigo and Mallow.
In the book you’ll find a sentence, maybe two, describing the energy of each card but really it’s up to you to feel that color and the energy and determine what it means for you. There are also no suggestions for spreads or uses for the cards, which again is awesome but may be frustrating for some people who aren’t familiar with traditional spreads or ways of working with the cards.
The book is large by companion book standards. It’s a Shutterfly photo book with beautiful thick glossy pages and samples of all the colors from the cards. There are also suggestions of crystals you can work with to connect the vibration and energy of each of the color categories.
What I love with this deck is this freeform flow that it seems to have. You can pull one card or ten and get some really awesome guidance regardless.

Messages of Fire and Creativity: Azure – angelic communication
This is interesting to see water in the space of fire, which along with the connection to angels is saying to me that the messages and spirit of the deck will be helpful when it comes to really getting guidance and help with issues of passion and fiery emotions. When it comes to creativity the more we can use the deck to connect to the angels and our guides the more clarity we can gain around our creative power.
Messages of Water and Healing: Damascus – self-love
When it comes to energy of healing and getting messages around the element of water, this deck will love to share energy and message of self-love. When you feel a need for guidance in healing it feels like this will be a tool to really give the warm loving embrace that you need.
Messages of Spirit and the Universe: Light Apricot – release your fears
When Spirit wants to deliver messages through the Color Mage Oracle they will be strong in support for releasing fears. The warm and gentle golden light of apricot wants to hold you and support you in being able to let go of all the things that hold on to out of fear. Let the light inspire and guide you.
My impression of the deck when it comes to reading is that it’s definitely something that you want to give yourself time and space and room to work with. It’s not a “quick read” deck but on you really want to connect to, one you’ll really want to grow into and take your time to get to know. The energy is overall supportive and very connected to spirit. But then, spirit, the angels and our guides love color.
If you’re someone who’s drawn to color or you love the idea of visualizing and working with color, this deck is a must have! The vast spectrum of color that’s present and the depth of energies and the combinations that are possible here really give you lots to work with energetically and intuitively.
