:maple_leaf: Happy Mabon everyone! Happy Autumn! :maple_leaf:
Yes, it’s that time of year again, the start of the most wonderful season of them all. Fall. The time when nature surrenders to the turning of the Wheel and we prepare for our own time of turning inward. And pumpkin spice everything!
Today I wanted to share a few of my favorite crystals and essential oils for working with the emotional and sometimes tricky side of this season. Because, let’s be honest, there’s only so much pumpkin spice in the world and it can only mask the pain of emotional release and awakening for so long. But DAMN if it doesn’t taste good while you try.
OK, enough memes! Let’s get to business!
Here’s what’s on my altar…
I have my altar set up with some of the crystals I’ve chosen for Mabon this year.
Mabon is one of the names for the Neo-Pagan celebration of the Autumn Equinox which happened today at 1:22am PST. This is a time for honoring the return of the dark and bidding farewell to the light as the sun begins its journey into rest.
Winter is coming {damnit…no more memes…but that would have been time for a good one}.
The Autumn Equinox is a time for us to start preparing for the cold and dark months ahead. Even if you aren’t going to be in literal cold and darkness, we still see the sun set earlier and we notice at least some measurable drop in temperatures. But more than anything this is s time for going within and facing the inner darkness of the spirit.
Some of the themes we can focus on during this season to make the most of the energies we’ll encounter are:
:fallen_leaf: releasing resistance to change
:fallen_leaf: surrendering to the inevitable
:fallen_leaf: getting grounded in our bodies
:fallen_leaf: reaching for higher wisdom from within
:fallen_leaf: creating and finding balance in our lives
:fallen_leaf: facing our fears, especially around death and loss
When we find ourselves in that place of reflecting as the dark months approach we can work with crystals and oils to make the energetic transitions and the shift of vibration a little easier.
Here are some of my favorites for Mabon and the whole Autumn Season.
Amethyst
This is a Third Eye Chakra stone but it also connects to the Crown Chakra, making it a great one for using to help us better “see” our higher self’s guidance and messages. Amethyst can help us with creating and finding balance, connection to our higher consciousness, visualizing the wisdom being sent our way, and even dealing with loss and grief.
On my altar this year I have two “regular” amethyst stones but I also have two black amethyst pieces. Black amethyst does much of the same work as the other amethyst, but when it comes to energetic and emotional work it helps to release energy and deal with things on a much deeper level, often helping us open up our subconscious and unconscious connecting to the things that may be holding us back from growing.
Citrine
This Solar Plexus stone is great for working with the abundance, manifesting and harvesting energy of this season. Citrine also helps with reducing negativity, so if you find yourself prone to SAD, seasonal affective disorder, or other doldrums and depression this time of year, citrine is your stone! This is also the stone of hope, joy and courage, all things that can help us get through the darker seasons.
Carnelian
This is a Sacral Chakra stone which can help us with serenity, self-esteem and balance during this season of change. But carnelian is especially helpful this time of year because of it’s powerful connection to reincarnation and past lives. This time of year when death becomes a theme that we need to work through, we can find peace by using this stone to help us accept the process of reincarnation and use it to help unlock past life wisdom.
Hematite
Hematite is a root chakra stone…actually it’s an Earth Star stone, which makes it super grounding. The Earth Star is a sub-personal chakra that resides below us down into the earth and connects us deeply to the grounding energy of earth’s iron core. With this stone we find balancing, grounding, protection and the ability to reflect back negativity with the stones shiny iron surface. Hematite also helps us deal with emotional pain, something that can come us if we’re feeling the need to face death, loss, grief and the impending darkness of the coming months.
Herkimer Diamond
This is one of my favorites, if for no other reason than the fact that it’s just such a beautiful stone. When autumn comes herkimer diamond can be a great help with easing us through a spiritual growth period. It helps us to release fears, find clarity, access ancient wisdom and learn to relax into the changes. It’s also a wonderful stone for connecting to the angelic realms.
Place your cleansed and retuned crystals on an altar with other seasonal items. Carry them with you in a small back or in your pocket to connect to their vibrations for the season. Or you can use them to create a crystal grid for manifesting these qualities throughout the fall.
Here are some of my favorite essential oils for Mabon and the whole Autumn Season.
Essential oils, on a metaphysical and spiritual level, are great to add to your stones. You can rub a few drops in your hands and then hold your stones for meditation, or you can simply diffuse, sniff and wear the oils to help add another level of healing and balance for the season.
Cedar helps with relaxation, slowing and calming down, and releasing tension. It’s the season of letting go and Cedar can help you surrender to the process.
Pine helps with de-stressing but it can also awaken us to being open to the hope of a new beginning once the darkness lifts.
Frankincense is a traditional autumn resin that is often used for meditation. It’s great for spiritual awareness but it can also bring grounding and balance. Another wonderful reason for using frankincense during autumn is that it helps with releasing fear and doubt.
Myrrh is another traditional fall resin for one really big reason – it’s connection to death. Myrrh is known for having been used in funeral preparations in many ancient cultures, including being one of the resins mentioned in the Bible as being used for embalming. We can work with myrrh to help us with releasing fears around death and to awaken us to our past lives. It’s also purifying, restorative and protective.
I actually like to take all four of these oils and either blend them together in a base of jojoba or sweet almond oil and use it for meditation during autumn. Another great idea is mixing a little of each oil with something distilled water in a mister spray bottle along with a piece of clear quartz. Then you can use this to sent your ritual space during the season as well.

A great post Jess 🙂 I hope you’re having a wonderful Mabon celebration. I’m too busy with Lilith’s things to think about celebrating. I don’t normally do Mabon anyway. I do have to prepare for winter though. It’s the worst time of year for my body. So I have to strengthen my muscles and ligaments before the ice arrives.
